Unfair Item Strike / Feedback Blackmailer

From time to time you will come accross the ebay Bully, ( anyone wanting further contact information about this particular seller please email me ) these people will go as far as they can to win.

I recently bought a DVD ( Lost Horizon see my feedback ), paid via Paypal and awaited my purchase three weeks later no DVD and no reply to my many emails, I was left no choice but to go through the paypal proceedure for my refund.
It was then that I found out what a nasty little bully my seller was, who sent me a threatening email to let me know that he was able too in the most easy way... to have a non payment item strike put on to my account if i tried to get my refund! it would seem that three of these strikes on your account and you are of ebay.

I continued and got my refund, good as his word my seller got the item strike put on my account, it would seem that this proceedure is easy to do and is automatic and my seller informed me with glee that he had done this so many times and had got sellers kicked off ebay ... his words not my'n.

I sent all the information ( by registered post ) including his threatening emails, headers, ect in hard copy form to:

Investigations Dept, Atten Suspenstion Appeals, Ebay International AG, PO Box 9473, Dublin 15, Ireland.

I also emailed them all info to be on the safe side, and within a couple of days the item strike was removed from my account. My seller in the meantime had tried to get his money back through ebay without success.

Yes he has left nasty feedback...but its to be expected and I can live with it. If possible please write your own reviews for others to read, and help us to make these many bully's known to all.

Buying clothing from eBay - Helpful hints

HiThis guide is about buying clothing successfully from eBay, will it fit, and the difference methods of checking. As I have beenselling on eBay since February 2007 as a business and prior to that clearing the attic etc, I have been purchasing from eBay since 2000, and as clothing is my passion I would like to share a few things with you. Never ever trust the size on the label Seriously, they all vary. There are no UK or global conventions for what is a size 8, 10, 12, ...., 22, etc. This means where you might be a size 12 in one brand you might need a size 8 or even a 16 from another brand. There is lots more information on my pages on each listingI sell a huge amount of NewPer Una clothing for instance, and even in their range the sizes vary not by more than an inch normally, but when something is tight fitting, that extra inch can make all the difference.Always get the MeasurementsMost clothing sellers will give measurements, especially when they have a returns policy. If there are no measurements, please do not rely on the item size, contact the seller and ask for the measurements, if they will not provide them, or are very slow to provide them, question whether you should be buying from that seller. How measurements are takenThis is how I take my measurements, other sellers might vary so you will need to ask. Use measurements against something you own which fits.Chest - underarm to underarm tape laid flat on the item. Remember this measurement is one way only, rather than doubling it and hoping for the best, grab something you own, which you like the fit on and compare the 2 measurements, if you are a 36 chest for instance your top probably will measure 19 or 20 inches possibly more underarm to underarm, (else it would be skin tight). By checking the top, dress, jacket you are purchasing against something you own then you stand more chance of getting a good fit. Your Bra Size is not your chest! - The 36 D is 36 inches with the tag around your torso and back tight - this isnt the widest part of your chest, use the full cup measurements.Waist - again on the waist band - one wayHips - everyone is different heights but I measure 3 to 5 inches under the waist.Inside leg - from gusset seam to bottom of the hemHem - across the bottom hem of the garment, leg on trousers, or on a top the bottom seam. How much do sizes differ?Something in a size 10Jane Norman is considerably small thanNext for instance and smaller again than Per Una , I have found M

PVR Humax 9200t Hard Drive Freeview Recorder

For anyone considering the purchase of a PVR, I would like to recommend this model.Easy set-up, watch 1 channel while you tape another (or tape 2 others, with some limits), and one touch record from the on-screen guide. Think Sky Plus without the monthly fee. (no series record though). You will see a lot on the forums about disc noise and other glitches. Luckily, I have experienced none. There is also Picture in Picture, download via PC socket, and much more, if you want it. Say goodbye to tapes/discs, and get 80 hours of programmes stored on the hard drive for under 200.I have no connection with the company, or indeed with EBay. (I bought mine in Oxford Street). Just a satisfied owner, passing on a recommendation. If you are undecided about a Freeview Recorder, take the plunge. I don't think you will regret it.As of now -April 2008 Series record is available and works well. Buy one!

Water resistance definition for watches

There are several features that help make a watch water-resistant. The most important is the gaskets, or 0 rings-made of rubber, nylon or Teflon which form watertight seals at the joints where the crystal, case back and crown meet the watch case. if the watch is a chronograph, the chronograph pushers will also have gaskets.

In addition, water-resistant watch cases are lined with a sealant, applied in the form of a quick-hardening liquid, which helps keep water out.

The thickness and material of the case is also a big factor in determining whether a watch can safely be worn underwater. The case must be sturdy enough to withstand pressure without caving in. In general, this means a steel or titanium case or a steel case plated with gold, manufacturers say. Solid gold cases can be water resistant provided they are sufficiently thick.

A screw-in case back, as opposed to one that pushes in, also contributes to a watch's water resistance. A screw-in crown, a feature of many divers' watches, helps prevent water getting into the case through the watch-stem hole. When it is screwed down it forms a water tight seal much like the seal between a jar and its lid.Definition of Water Resistance

The different levels of water resistance as expressed in meters are only theoretical. They refer to the depth at which a watch will keep out water if both watch and the water are perfectly motionless. These conditions, of course, are never met in the real swimmer's or diver's world. In real life, the movement of the wearer's arm through the water increases the pressure on the watch dramatically; so it can't be worn to the depths indicated by lab testing machines.Usage RecommendationsThe following usage recommendations are suggested by most watch manufacturers.

Water-resistant to 30 meters (100 feet). Will withstand splashes of water or rain but should not be worn while swimming or diving.

Water-tested to 50 meters (165 feet). Suitable for light water activities

Water-tested to 100 meters (330 feet). Suitable for swimming and snorkeling.

Water-tested to 150 meters (500 feet). Suitable for snorkeling.

Water-tested to 200 meters (660 feet). Suitable for skin diving.

Diver's 150 meters (500 feet). Meets ISO standards and is suitable for scuba diving.

Diver's 200 meters (660 feet). Meets ISO standards and is suitable for scuba diving.

Please note thatit isnot recommend go swimming or diving with your watch unless it has a screw-down crown (also known as screw-lock or screw-in crown) and is water-resistant to at least 100 meters.Care for a Water Resistant WatchIt is not recommended to wear your water resistant watch in a shower, sauna or hot tub. The extreme heat causes the metal parts to expand at a different rate than the rubber gaskets. This creates small openings that can allow water droplets to penetrate the watch. Sudden temperature changes are especially harsh. Take care not to jump into a cold pool after wearing your watch in the hot tub. After swimming or diving in salt water, immediately rinse the watch in a stream of fresh water. If your watch has a rotating bezel, turn the bezel several times while rinsing it. This will prevent salt buildup and corrosion of the bezel ring.

Some chemicals can corrode the gaskets and make it vulnerable. Heavily chlorinated water can cause problems, as can spray-on perfumes and hairsprays that work their way into the watch's seams and damage the gaskets. (They can also damage your watch's finish.)

Leather straps can be made to be water resistant too. Generally however, leather straps are more easily damaged by frequent exposure to water. So if you are going to wear your watch while swimming -- think of buying one with a metal bracelet or a rubber or nylon diver strap. Finally please note this is a general guide and you should refer to the watch manufacturers recommendation in your user manual.many thanks for reading this review, we hope it was helpfull.

Universal Li-Ion Battery Chargers for Digital Cameras

GUIDE TO UNIVERSAL CHARGERS FOR LI-ION BATTERIES

Lithium Ion Batteries are rechargeable batteries mostly used in Digital Cameras, Camcorders, mobile Phones and PDAs.

Li-Ion as they are called in short form has provided a huge relief to the Battery guzzling Power Hungry Cameras that the users have been facing in recent times. It is not an exaggeration to say that Batteries have taken the number one spot in terms of cost of consumables for Digital Cameras. Li-Ion Batteries come to their own in terms of cost and reliability. Li-ion batteries can be recharged over 300 times. I have calculated a savings of 2400 in the life of a single Lithium Ion CR-V3 Battery.

Li-Ion battery needs to be charged using a Mains or Car charger. Many modern cameras have built in chargers but need a power adapter cable to be capable of being used. The manufacturers usually sell them as Camera accessories in order to minimise cost and increase profit through the sale of accessories. Hence you find the adapter cable to be very expensive.

You will need an external charger if::

Your Camera has no external mains power connector
The power cable is unavailable or lost or broken
You need an additional charger to keep the availability free. Keep using the camera while charging a spare battery on the charger.

The design Challenge

Chargers need to be matched with their partners Batteries. As you would be well aware, there is an infinite variety of Cameras followed by their own battery designs and hence the bewildering variety in the shapes, sizes and technical specification of the chargers. Being connected to the Mains power also means they need to be sturdy and safe.

Chargers work by keeping constant supply of voltage

Buying "Rerooted" Sindy Dolls

Firstly, beware of sellers selling rerooted dolls they didnt reroot themselves. They cannot guarantee the quality of the work, or for that matter tell you exactly how the doll was rooted and by what method. This seems like a good cop out excuse to me! "Well, I DID say I didnt reroot the doll so I didnt know all the hair would fall out when you tried to wash and brush it!"

Secondly, ALWAYS read the description carefully to ascertain method used and what hair used etc. There are many methods in use for rerooting. I personally prefer the knotting method, but I believe the weaving method to be very secure also. It is preferable that glue isnt used. This isnt necessary with the double knotting method. Although a little glue is necessary when replacing the rooted in lashes, otherwise they are liable to push back into the eye.

For those wishing to start this hobby, I advise starting on 2gen dolls as they have very soft and pliable heads and fewer holes plugs to fill. I find saran hair is best, although nylon does hold a curl really well. You can obtain advice from retrodolls.com, restoredoll.com, mylittlecustoms (Robin) and many others who will be only too happy to advise you. Dont be afraid to ask questions. We all have to start somewhere! I received some excellent advice when I first began.

Good luck and hope this was helpful.

Further....................

It would appear my guide has offended someone. Firstly, it has never been my intention to offend anyone just to be informastive and helpful. I do not mention Ooak Sindy dolls in my guide so I am very unsure where she has got this from. An Ooak simply means "One of a kind" - it doesnt have to mean home-crafted everything. An "Ooaked" doll may have her hair changed, an outfit may be homemade but doesnt have to be, but can be accessorized to owners own design, etc. etc.

The unpleasant remark about negative feedback is unkind. The few I have were retaliatory under the old feedback system - give a neg and automatically get one back, often making people become afraid to leave negs where deserved.

Generally speaking, it is obvious that where hair has just been poked into the head it will come out if not glued as well! To then go on to criticise the knotting method...... which everyone knows to be one of the most secure methods of rerooting. Please just bewarewhen buying dolls rerooted using the rerooting tool method that the seller has glued the hair in place orIT WILL come out if you brush it!

Only trying to be helpful and prevent others from wasting their money on dolls which havnt been rerooted securely. I would respectfully suggest that the person who took offense to my guide make sure she lets potential buyrs know she glues the hair in after she has jut poked the hair in the holes as I am quite sure fresh air wont keep the hair in on its own!'Nuf said. Over and out.

A GUIDE TO BUYING CHROME ART DECO LAMPS

Since there appears to be no guides to buyers of Art Deco lighting I am offering this in the hope it may be useful to those about to take their first step to owning an icon of this fascinating period. Firstly, I must applaud the market place of Ebay, it is such a wonderful world wide arena which has brought many hitherto hard to find or near impossible to source items to just about everyone with a computer and it was in this spirit I entered the Ebay arena, looking for my first bargain.

However, bargains come at a price and at times can fall far from the bargain arena, verging on pure junk. Areas of concern can be: - description, age, height, quality, number, postal charges, insurance, proof of postage and last but not least is the communications you have with your buyer.

I have always been an avid fan of At Deco and until the concept of Ebay arrived, I had little or no knowledge of where to buy my treasures. After signing into Ebay I soon purchased my first chrome lamp.

When it arrived, I found it needed re wiring, the chrome was being attacked by rust and the weighted base was covered in what I can only describe as a filthy rag. But I had won the lamp for a very small price - so here lies the first lesson, cost is relative and you do get what you pay for in this life.

Next was the lesson that original lamps are seldom (never say never) made from steel unless it is stainless steel although this is quite unusual.Usually lamps are constructed by using either brass or copper which does not rust. As the construction of lamps went into the 1940's and 50's, steel was used since it was cheaper, so rust can also be a strong indication of a lamps age.

Now to wiring: - I have purchased lamps that were described as having been re wired - but in reality had only been re wired for cosmetic reasons, leaving the original wire hidden within the unit, specifically either under the felt base or hidden within some embellishment of the lamps (or centre light) features. Ask if the lamp has been fully re wired unless you are prepared to do the work yourself. That said, it may be prudent to ask when was it re wired, since plastic or PVC covered wiring has been around for many years.

If the lamp has been originally wired using clear coated cable (invariably two core) and especially if it is a centre light, please remember that this form of cable was prone to heat distress causing the outer cable to become brittle and discoloured and fail at the slightest stress was/is put on the wires. Again, originality is not always a good thing and beware those who say they are leaving the decision to re wire to the new owner - it may mean the fixture is difficult to route new wire and the seller has not tried or just plain given up, passing this sometime tricky and tedious job on to the new buyer.

Many reputable sellers (myself included) will declare that a lamp or fixture has been re chromed. This in itself is not a bad thing so long as the work has been completed to a high standard. Cries of originality I hear, but may I ask you to consider that owned a 1930's Bentley that had been lovingly restored but left with its original rusty bumpers, your pride and joy would look uncompleted and unloved. Some aging of chrome with the bloom of copper showing through can be very attractive, but there are limits. Re chroming is very expensive and may be the reason some Art Deco lamps are offered for sale in all brass or all copper, which usually means the seller has simply polished off all the chrome to leave the base metal.

I remember a seller at a fair asking a ludicrous amount of money for a very poor condition chrome lamp that I was told had been used by Liberties store in London and still had the Liberties painted name on the base. It actually did have the logo on the base although the name was badly chipped with a lamp where the chrome was poor, the metal was badly dented and had a rusty base. As it was it was almost worthless, however with restoration and photography of the original name on the lamp, lovingly re created would give the lamp a new lease of life and provenance with the picture supplied giving the link and provenance.

The Last Suooer by Leonardo Da Vinci has had many refurbishments over the years to maintain its appearance. Some old vintage cars have had most of the original structure replaced, buildings repaired with stone fashioned to the old pattern. Originality also comes at a price, however just ask yourself how long were these lamps made to last? How long was a car of the 1920's or 30's meant to last. Restoration is sometimes the only way to ensure these masterpieces remain for us to enjoy for many years to come.

Almost all Art Deco lamps have a weighted base. This is usually made from cast iron made into the shape of the base with areas left open for centre rods, switches and wiring or indeed anything the manufacturer thinks may be attached to the base. Other weighted base material could be lead, steel disks and in some later (1940's) lamps even concrete can be found.

Since cast iron is the most common, it is this material I shall write about. Over the many years these lamps and fittings have been around, cast iron weights were subject to dampness, since central heating during the period was rare. It is therefore reasonable to suggest the bases would require attention at some time.

The weighted base is what is under that (in my case filthy) coloured piece of cloth on the bottom of the lamp. It may have been replaced at some time during its life after re wiring or purely because it has worn out. On some occasions, your lamp may have been at a car boot sale or an antique fair, outside and in the pouring rain, the seller ignorant to the damage that dampness will undoubtedly cause to the cast weight and the material is in close proximity to.

A good lamp should have had the weight removed and wire scrubbed to remove all traces of rust and have the chrome (if that is the material) cover cleaned on the inside to prevent any reaction between cover and base. Due to the expansion of a cast iron weight due to excessive damp causing considerable rusting has resulted in the total loss of a lamp because the chrome cover could not be removed.

If a lamp is advertised as having been fully re wired, I would suggest you ask your seller if they carried out the work and if so whether the cast iron weight had been cleaned. This is really no more than you would ask a watchmaker when offering a fully serviced watch, or even a second hand washer, since no one wants to buy other peoples dirt. A well presented lamp will also have had the base re covered with green baize (or purple or maroon) matching the lamps original fit.

This leads on to a seller's description of uncleaned - Why? Something clean and shiny sells far easier than something grubby and soiled. What's hidden beneath the grime? If in doubt ask and if there is nothing to hide then you may be on to your first bargain, but please remember that condition is relative to the end price, or at least it should be.

Running through the centre of almost all chrome Art Deco lamp is a steel (for strength) rod, threaded at both ends to be able to secure it to the base and to fit the bulb holder on the top. These also rust and sometimes the base nut, rod and cast iron base can become very corroded. On occasions, these centre rods have to be replaced, again quite natural and professional. During restoration it is quite common to earth the lamp with an appropriate earth tag lying between nut, rod and cast base. However, if the cast base is not clean of rust and the centre rod is also rusty, how can an appropriate earth be made? What ever the method used a lamp must be earthed appropriately.

If a seller indicated they have re wired a lamp, they must have anchored the cable within the lamp to prevent the cable from being pulled from the lamp by accident (tripping over the cable|) thus pulling the wires from a base switch or from the bulb holder. If you feel you are in doubt about this, then it would save much time and frustration if you asked the seller this prior to bidding on their item.

It is also quite usual for the bulb holder to be replaced with a new chrome unit which has an earthing feature inside the holder itself. The only visible update would be the small protrusion under the bulb holder where the earth wire is secured by a small screw. I usually try to keep these at the back of the lamp so they are unseen when on display.

A gallery is usually fitted to bulb holder to allow for the fitment of a glass shade. Sometimes a hoop frame is used to enable a shade with a small opening at the top to be secured using a chrome base plate and chrome finial, changing the bulb or turning a switched bulb holder on from beneath the shade.

Some curved stem lamps have a goose neck or swivel top and are usually used as bedside or desk lamps. Some sellers will turn the swivel upright thus showing a much taller lamp. This may be purely ignorance on their part or indeed an intention to mislead. It can be generally agreed that if a shade has two holes (small top - larger bottom) it is specifically for either a centre or wall light or a goose neck bedside or desk lamp, therefore if a standard vertical chrome lamp has a shade that had a huge hole at the top, it is not fitted with and appropriate shade. This is not definitive, but as a rule of thumb, if it does not look right, then its not!

Since we have been lead to shades, it must be said that a good Art Deco glass shade can be the making of a mundane lamp so therefore the price you pay should also reflect this. There are simply thousands of shades out there and in the main, if a seller discloses minor chipping to the rim (that that sits inside the gallery, usually secured with three screws) that is quite normal as fair wear and tear. A chunk missing from the rim is not acceptable unless disclosed. A cracked shade, in my opinion is worthless, unless I can personally live with it for its pure rarity. In some cases a good quality shade can be the most expensive part of a lamp, regardless of the lamps design. In fact some shades can fetch hundreds of pounds because of manufacturer, age, colour, shape, style etc.

Galleries are made from steel, or brass but rarely copper since the metal is not strong enough to hold the weight of a shade. They are invariably bent or have a screw missing and most lamps have a new one fitted made to the old pattern. This in my view does not detract from a lamps value. In fact some original galleries can be quite crudely made with a mixture of one, two or three screws to secure the shade and also have a rather high rim or very low rim making the fixture of a nice shade almost impossible.

Round chrome bases are the most prolific and in an attempt to make a lamp look better than it is, it has been known for a seller to place (typically) a chrome lady or other embellishment on the base. I cannot give a definitive answer for these and again ask you to consider whether the lamp looks right, for if the figure (or what ever used) sits on the lip of the round base and is seated precariously on the edge, then it most likely is not an original fit. Again, if you are not sure, then ask your seller before you bid!

I am personally very dubious about the Ballerina lamp, a small chrome figure of a girl on one foot with one arm in the air for I believe these to have originally been candlesticks, converted to hold a bulb holder. Again, most of these lamps are advertised as requiring re wiring, but had they been re wired you would see the wire travelling up the back of the figure which so detracts from the beauty of a lamp with hidden wiring.

The only chrome lady I know of that has her wire exposed is the Diana lamp, because she was cast from solid brass and is a tall significant piece.

How you search for Art Deco lamps will also greatly affect your results, and may also mean you might miss a bargain. To search for the words Art Deco lamp is a good starting position although you must be aware that some sellers refer in the description to their lamp as Art Deco and go on to describe then as Art Deco Style! To follow on from this and generally speaking no genuine Art Deco lamp of the period is made from pewter and never cold cast bronze resin or any other form of resin, made to look like spelter. Collecting is an art and there really is no other way than to learn and to ask as many questions as you like. If a seller becomes resentful of your questions, they have something to hide. If you ask a question regarding age and the seller responds the item has been in the family for years or they bought it at an antique centre, does not give you assurances the item is genuine. Again, if the item does not feel right to you then pass it by for something will eventually come up that is quite clearly right for you.

Some lamps are very much like a painting, you should be buying it because you want to spend some of your life living with and appreciating its beauty, not just because it is of intrinsic value, present or future.

Please take great care when viewing auctions with only one photograph or that have been taken at an unusual angle, for it is quite possible the seller is trying to hide or mask a deficiency. There is no harm in asking for other photos and if all is well you will probably receive them, but if not then your alarm bells should begin to ring.

Now a word about private auctions: - I have been selling with private auctions for about two years, ever since an identical lamp I was selling became available for sale in China. Winning bidders have also been offered second chance offers for a lamp I was selling, again from someone spoofing to be me. There are many scams which I hope my actions will prevent new bidders from experiencing. Some sellers prefer to make their auctions private to prevent well wishers from pointing out the goods on offer are fake - a good example of this is any of the many fake up market watch sellers, with opening low bids who usually have a very low feedback score.

It is always wise to check a sellers feedback to see where that feedback comes from, since it is quite possible to make up a very good feedback record by the purchase of small inexpensive goods, lulling the buyer into trusting a 100% feedback to await the buyer tempted to buy the bargain of the century only to be sold either rubbish or not receiving anything at all.

I recommend anyone who is buying from Ebay to pay with Paypal. There are no fees for buyers although there is a small fee for sellers. However this small fee guarantees payment for the seller and gives buyer protection for the buyer. I (personally) would never buy from anyone who will only accept cash or postal orders. It is interesting to note that Ebay does not allow sellers to charge their buyers with a Paypal fee for making payments this way, although you can see this on many auctions. It is not fair, not ethical and is breaking Ebay rules. If this is in a seller's description or payment details I suggest you challenge this before bidding or do not bit at all.

The same applies to packaging fees. We (the sellers) are offering our goods for sale in an auction, so what gives us the right to then charge you a packaging fee. Any good quality on line market store would never charge you a packaging fee, so what gives an Ebay seller the right to charge such a fee - the choice is yours, you are the customer, you are always right (well almost) and if you ask a seller a question it should be answered in a timely and friendly fashion.

The very last word, if id does not feel right, then its not!

With best wishes (and intent)

Diomede Art Deco Lamps

Easy-Rider Hip Rider v. Hip Chick Hip Seat

I bought this item after trying out a Hip Chick Hip Seat at a National Trust property. I was seduced by the Easy Rider's price (cheaper than Hip Seat) and the fact it has a pocket on the outside!

The Easy Rider is made of soft cotton which I found easier to put on tightly than the Hip Seat if you have a small waist. The seat about the same size but felt a bit more generously padded on bit which is next to your hip.

The quality of the stitching seems to be poorer than the Hip Seat but it does seem durable.

The manufacturer claims you could store a nappy on top of the seat if you unzip the pocket it sits in. This is true if you use disposable nappies.

The outside pocket is probably a bit of a red-herring as I doubt you can get much in it - certainly not a purse bulging with old receipts, coins and all your cards. The inside pockets, like the Hip Chick Hip Seat, are really just for very slim items such as credit cards. Again, I doubt these will be of much use as once it is on and baby is perched on seat, you wouldn't be able to get them out!

All in all, considering the price, I am very please with the Easy Rider Hip Rider. It is lightweight, comfortable, seems suitable for a wide range of waist sizes and, I think, better value than the Hip Seat.

However, I think the Hip Seat is probably slightly better made, and I'm told, the stiffer fabric moulds to the main wearer's shape after time.

But given the choice, I would stick with Easy Rider.

Thanks.

Lying sellers Location Abuse Check it out !

Please vote yes for this guide sowe can help others!

Have you ever purchased an item on eBay uk only to find out the seller was located in Hong Kong? This act is called Location Abuse and it is happening on eBay all the time. If the seller is registered in Hong Kong, and they say in their auction: "Fast shipping from Hong Kong, United Kingdom" they have committed location abuse. They're fooling the search into thinking the item is in the UK.

I myself, witnessed this just yesterday when I searched for aspecifc gold coinlocated in the UK and most of the search results were for sellers from the US! Here is what a seller posted about this issue on the eBay Powerseller forum:

Theres this clown in America who sells NGC coins in the UK and states that he is in UK. He charges 16 to post coins which then takes nearly 6 weeks to arrive after he has stated shipping will take 7-10 days.I've read his feedback, and so many people have been misled by the fact that he is in US, especially newbies. So when there stuff doesnt arrive they neg him, and he ruthlessly responds by neging them back even if they have a valid complaint. I feel really sorry for all the honest people who have bought items off him thinking they were coming from UK, paid a load for postage, had to wait months for their stuff and end up getting negs!!AND not only does this guy neg people, but he has said things like 'i hope you are in a car wreck and die' and 'its not my fault if you're too you're an idiot that can't read!"Some powerseller he is!!!

Acutally WAS! since he was NARU'd I'll disclose his name

johnsbestbargains (private)

This loser made his feedback private after 10 people left him negatives in less than 10 days.

As an eBay enthusiast I ask, what happens if you bid on an auction which is stated as in UK with the words actual postage paid only to discover that you have to pay actual postage from overseas? Could you appeal a non paying strike on those grounds?

The good news is that sellers who mislead customers about their location in the "Sell Your Item" form are violating two sections of the eBay User Agreement. Sections 7.2 a

SPOTTING DVD FAKES ON EBAY

I was reading on a site whgich i found of google, and thought this may be a useful guide to put on ebay as it helped me out!!!

HOW TO AVOID BUYING COUNTERFEIT DVDsWe've probably all had the misfortune of seeing the efforts of some monkey pirate who downloads a movie and rips it to disk. Fuzzy visuals, distorted sound, people getting up and walking out of the cinema and you've just paid out for the insult! So, how to avoid buying a copy when you're expecting an original? How to spot a bad one if you think you may have been duped? Here are a few tips;REGIONAL CODING:Make sure you understand which region is appropriate to which part of the world the seller is trading from. Why does he have only Region 1 releases when he lives in Asia? Look on reputable reseller's websites for that Region and examine the cover art. Check it against the image the Ebay seller is using. Does it match what you expect? Or does he use the disclaimer 'Cover may vary from the one shown'? Hmm. Why would it vary? For the UK, all releases will feature a symbol of the British Board of Classification,, i.e. the red 18 circle. If it claims to be a genuine item and hasn't got this symbol, why not? If it's Region 2 and sourced from France, Holland, Germany etc, expect to see that country's language printed on the covers. Again, subtitles would be for appropriate European nations, not Asian languages.Ask yourself the question, if it's Region 1 encoded and manufactured for the American and Canadian market why would it feature Asian subtitles? (In answer to a correspondent, it's my opinion all Region 1 imports from the Phillipines would be fake - if legit, they should be Region 3) Also consider why would an American movie for the American market feature permanent English subtitles? (Thanks to everyone who wrote to me to note that optional subtitles will be on most releases for the hard of hearing.)For Hong Kong etc disks are Region 3 and will usually feature Cantonese or Mandarin text on the cover and on the disk itself. Here you would expect subtitles. Both covers and discs can feature a blue square 'DTS 9' label. I have never seen this on any legitimate Region 1 disc, but have seen it occasionally on Region 3 releases. The FBI warning is only on Region 1 releases. Chinese printing on the disk and cover art, but the movie plays with the FBI warning? I don't think so.Multi-region or Regional coding removed? A few releases are Region 0 which means that they'll play anywhere in the world, but if that title is advertised with a Regional code on a reputable reseller's website, then chances are the seller has just removed the nuisance of the Regional code when he copied the disk. You can find out more detail by looking here: http://www.home-cinema-guide.co.uk/dvdfor41.htm and here: http://www.pctechguide.com/10dvd_Regional_coding.htmTHE SPIEL:It's one thing a seller telling you that the item is genuine or original, quite another when he uses the word 'quality'. Quality is a term used to describe the transfer of the copy. There's no need to mention quality when it's an original release. They're all produced to the same high standards. Don't rely on feedback. Some people are happy with pirated discs. THE COST:The movie's barely out on DVD in any Region, but the seller is offering it at a third of the retail cost. Too good to be true is probably right. Before bidding, ask the seller about provenance i.e. where did he obtain it? Another correspondent to me advises that if she sees a neg in the ebayer's feedback, she'll check through all pages and if the negs say 'fake' then she'll avoid. THE CASE:So the seller isn't sending the original Amoray plastic case because he's saving you on postage costs, right? Wrong. He's just minimizing his overheads. He doesn't want to buy in a load of cases. That'll cut into his profit. It doesn't make much difference on the postage, so insist on the original case. If the artwork is folded in two and never looks like it's ever been inserted within a case (i.e. no slight twin folds where the spine would create such impression) and it's in a transparent sleeve, then be wary.VISUAL EXAMINATION:Is the artwork on the cover smudgy?Does the artwork smell like it's fresh from a photojet or inkjet? Lick your finger and rub. Ink coming off? Does the paper used feel like the same kind used in genuine releases? Compare.Does the art match that on reputable reseller's websites or are there discrepancies? Hold the disk up to the light. Tilt it to one side. Can you see anything printed underneath? Like Maxell or other well known manufacturer names? What colour is the dye on the playable side of the disk? Shiny silver? Gold? Blue? Check it against reputable releases. The vast majority are a platinum type.COPYRIGHT WARNINGS: Look at the circumference of the disk centre and see if the warning makes sense. You may see something like 'warning: all rights reserved, for home use only, unauthorized public performance, broadcasting of copying is a violation of applicaple laws." You will note that the conjunctive between broadcasting and copying is not 'or' but 'of'. I don't remember seeing such glaring errors on any legitimate discs, and the spelling of applicable is wrong. That's not to say that the legitimate releases from film companies are without error. Some of the cover art features appalling mistakes outlining a plot that barely resembles the movie just watched, listing incorrect character names and places and one disk I have even has a different BBFC certificate on it compared to that shown on the cover art. But you'll soon get a feel for what's genuine or not.Now check on the inner rim about the hub. Could be that the title of the film is etched which is frequently the case for mass-duplicated pirate movies but unnecessary for authentic releases which are secretly bar-coded.Holograms? Most studios now put holograms on all their cover art. Look and check.PLAYING THE DISK:Does the menu have dead links? Does the menu look professional or like it's been fudged on someone's PC?Special features? Where are they?Easter eggs? Occasionally a genuine disk will feature special hidden items. Why are they no longer accessible?Does the sound distort or are there inexplicable sound drops? If it's DTS or Dolby Digital, why does the transfer sound only stereo at best?Is the movie print dark, grainy and in sections very pixelated? A sure fire confirmation that it's a pirate.WHAT TO DO?Complain to the seller, outlining that it is against the laws of just about every country to pass off a copy of a copyrighted disk as an original. (For UK see here: http://www.aacp.org.uk/action/detail.html?id=8 )Ask for a full refund. Be fair. Some people won't be clued up and if the seller is offering only a few titles then they could have bought in good faith, same as you. On the other hand, if it's a 'specialist' seller, show no mercy. Tell them that you will mark the disk as counterfeit with indelible pen and return it to them if they require once a refund is received, but otherwise hold on to it as evidence for the police. Report the rogue seller to ebay. Report them to the relevant movie studio's anti-piracy dept. Report them to trading standards. Report them to FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft). Report them to the police. Don't let the pirate get away with it. Set the hounds on them.

*** SELLERS BEWARE - BUYER PAYPAL POSTAL SCAM ***

Id just like to make everyone aware of another little scam that Ive recently come across!

Now most sellers have a paypal account so buyers pay for there items by using this method - This is an easy way to pay and we are all very grateful!

BUT

I bet you didnt know that a buyer could request that money back! EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE DISPATCHED THE ITEM!

Well Im afraid so! A few months ago I sold my mobile phone on ebay as I had recieved my latest free upgrade so didnt need it anymore... Well it states in the paypal rules that unless the item sold is over 150 you dont have to record the delivery.

WELL - This is what happened to me.....

I had put in the description a choice of either first class post or first class recorded delivery which I put as 80p more expensive as thats what it is. The buyer chose the cheaper option and paid for first class delivery and so thats what I sent it as. I sent the buyer a message saying that I had just sent the item and that it should arrive the next day, and then transfered the money to my bank account..... I didnt think anything else of it.....

THREE DAYS LATER

There were a few things that I needed to buy and being pregnant I took the easy option and decided to buy them from ebay instead of walking miles around the shops. I bid on a few things and was lucky enough to win 3 of them so later that day as always I went to my computer to pay for them.

THATS WHEN I FOUND OUT!

I typed in my password for my paypal account and all of a sudden I had a red warning notice saying that my account had been suspended as it was in arrears!

Naturally I was horrified to see this and so emediately went to the main paypal website and to my HORROR the buyer had filed an 'item not recieved' claim against me! The worst thing however was when I found out that the claim had been made less than an hour after I had sent the email to the buyer stating that I had sent the parcel.....

You see as soon as a buyer files one of these claims, paypal automatically takes the amount out of your account and stores it somewhere so that neither the buyer or seller can get hold of it until the dispute is resolved.

The big problem then is that you cant pay for anything using paypal until you have cleared the arrears by doing a bank transfer from your own bank account into paypal - This takes up to 7 days though!

The dispute concole at paypal said 'click here to resolve dispute' I did and then was horrified to find that the only way that I could resolve this in my favour was to enter a recorded delivery number which I just didnt have. (Because I hadnt recorded it)

So there you have it, I couldnt prove that I had sent it and even after about 30 messages to paypal not one person even had the curtesy to contact me and hasnt to this very day! Plus unless you have a recorded delivery number the dispute is automatically resolved in the favour of the buyer after 20 days.

My advise to you is to record the delivery of every parcel that you send and even better than that use ebays postage label facility! Its all linked to paypal and so stops the scammers :)

I hope this helps,

Hayley....

Fake "Genuine" Epson R800 / R1800 ink carts

The main content of this guide comes from the Photo-I chat forum @ www.photo-i.co.uk. but my own experience prompted me to write the guide.I first noticed the difference when a magenta cart I loaded put a heavy cast on my prints. Having changed this I started to notice a green cast on the prints. Then the print head started to block up. I'm now back to normal as I only now use carts from reputable sources. The main things to look for are:1. The carts feel tighter when fitting to the printer (they tend to be slightly thicker).2. A different font on the label and slight differences to the design and instructions.3. No serial number cut into the blank side of the cart.4. No place of origin in the rectangular box on the blank side. All mine had "Made in China" on the box and were as items 1,2,

10 TOP EBAY CONS....A GUIDE TO COMMON FRAUDS ON EBAY

This is a guide to some of the strategies and techniques employed by dishonest eBayers, both buyers and sellers. One of a series of no-nonsense, advert-free "coffee-break" guides I have written for new UK based eBayers, it's not too short, not too long, and I promise not to try to sell you anything.__________

SHILL BIDDINGIn eBay's own words, "Shill bidding is bidding that artificially increases an item's price or apparent desirability", and it's just as common on eBay as it is in any auction room up and down the country. But just because that dodgy geezer in the sheepskin coat, upping the interest on his old Mondeo, is all part of the "charm", it doesn't mean it's OK on eBay. In fact, it's a criminal offence and there have been several prosecutions, here in the UK. Not only that, but eBay's rules prevent you bidding on items being sold by your friends, family and (take note) your work colleagues! The only exceptions are purchases made using the "Buy it Now" option or fixed price listings. So how can you recognise the danger signs? Well, this is one of the easiest frauds to carry out, so many unsophisticated shill bidders are going to leave some clues for you. Check the number of bid retractions a bidder has - we can all make mistakes, but could we really enter the "wrong amount" over and over again? See if the user IDs are in the same format, or look similar in more obscure ways. Look out for sellers who immediately relist an item - wouldn't you try to communicate with a non-paying bidder first, instead of arbitrarily relisting straight away? Although it's easy to manipulate, have a look at the location given by the IDs concerned, and remember that eBay's "distance from seller" feature can be used to weed out those sellers who deliberately enter the wrong location (see my other guides for details of how this feature can be used to your advantage). Does the pattern of bids look right? Have any previous buyers left feedback suggesting that a seller may be pulling a fast one? Although we will never know, it is reasonable to assume that shill bidding has increased as an unfortunate side effect to eBay's new policy of hiding bidders' IDs once bidding exceeds 100, so be extra careful and scrutinise the bidder history details that now appear in the new pop-up windows.POSTAGE INFLATIONEver bid for an item and discovered an inflated postage charge? Well, so have I, even as a seasoned eBayer who should have checked first. If the seller is simply trying to avoid eBay fees, rather than trying to pull a fast one, then that's something between you (and your ability to assess the total cost of the item including shipping), the seller (and their ability to to assess how close they can push it before someone reports them) and eBay (and their ability to assess what they need to do to avoid any more adverse publicity)! If the seller is trying to con you then you may find something extremely mild (like headlining their 2nd class postal rate, for instance) or something very naughty (like a total absence of their delivery charge in the actual listing). If you haven't done it already, change your customised settings so that a postage column appears in all your searches, and allow yourself some investigative time for those impulse buys. One of my guides shows you how to adjust your customised settings to show not just a postage column, but other useful data too. Clearly, careful packing costs more than just the value of the stamps, but there are limits and eBay are actively pursuing sellers who are charging you too much. With eBay's new "Feedback 2" feature, you can help the eBay community by marking down sellers who overcharge and by marking up sellers who don't.FAKESHave you read official eBay press releases about how fraudulent sellers represent just a tiny fraction of all transactions? Have you also read comments to the effect that it's impossible to know just how many sellers on eBay are chomping at the bit to take you to the cleaners? Well, consider this. A recent report by the research group, IDC, showed that (at the time of the survey) more than 50% of all Microsoft software sold on eBay globally was fake, and it had become such a problem that Microsoft have launched a global campaign to track down the culprits. That's right, more than 50%! Well, in my humble opinion, 50% is rather bigger than "a tiny fraction". Everything from razor blades to archaeological artefacts are faked and offered to gullible buyers Some fakes are almost comical in their attempts to deceive, but others are much harder to spot. The other day, an eBayer posted a message on the chat boards, asking if it was OK to list "replica" **** trainers. Unbelievable! But it's a measure of the fact that some casual sellers do not realise that selling counterfeit items on eBay is naughty. At the other end of the scale, there are sellers whose activities are funding major organised crime. We are truly in a global market, where sellers' perceptions of legitimacy vary from country to country, and it's a shame we have to treat our on-line experiences with some circumspection. I won't insult your intelligence, you already know what to do, but remember that sellers can use special software that can create multiple eBay accounts, and the consequent interlinked positive feedbacks, faster than you could possibly imagine, so don't rely on sellers' feedback history. Have a look at my guide to feedback scamming, and how to avoid becoming a victim. And if you get the chance, have a look at my guide on how to roughly assess the level of fraud going on in the category of your choice, simply by using eBay's own search tools. Now I'd like to temper my comments at this point by saying that although eBay are bound to be a target, the trade in fakes is only there to start with because faked stuff often sells. So let's all be careful out there.THE SECOND CHANCE OFFERA bidder just gets pipped at the post, and ends up as the second highest bidder when the auction ends. A few days later the second highest bidder receives an email, ostensibly from the seller, saying that the original highest bidder has declined to pay and that the item is available if payment is sent. The email looks genuine and the buyer may not know much about how second chance offers work. With the increased awareness of other scams on eBay, the success rate for pulling off this type of fraud is much higher than it used to be. It has become such a problem that many experienced sellers take control of the situation by highlighting in their listings the fact that no second chance offers are made, and that the bidder should report any offer received to eBay. Always ascertain whether the second chance offer you have received is genuine, by contacting the buyer first, before parting with your hard earned cash. Ebay know this is a problem, and have introduced a policy whereby bidders' IDs are hidden on all items selling for over 100. However, you should still be careful, and never ever respond to emails unless you're absolutely certain of their origin."ADVERTISED ELSEWHERE"Have you seen those listings, where the seller says, "this item is advertised elsewhere, so I reserve the right to withdraw this auction at any time"? Well, this may be a genuine account of the situation, but what if the seller plans to withdraw it if the bidding has stopped far short of expectations? Exactly, and it could well be a con. If you really want the item then ask the seller to substantiate the claim, or move on. Nothing is more frustrating than finding the item you have been bidding on removed, because the seller is "advertising elsewhere", and you will be potentially tied in to the bidding on a bogus auction when you could be bidding elsewhere. This has become such a problem that many sellers are highlighting the fact that their item is "NOT advertised elsewhere" as a selling feature in it's own right."NOT AS DESCRIBED"How many times have you seen the phrase, "I'm not an expert" in sellers' descriptions. Perhaps I'm being harsh here, but if you follow the feedback trails to these sellers you will often find comments to the effect that the item was not without fault. Sellers will feign ignorance to avoid declaring faults, and it's yet another con. Be prepared to ask questions if you anticipate that the seller's perception of an item's condition will differ from your own. Try and get the seller to be more specific, if they are using vague terms such as "great", "lovely" or "fine", and remember that many buyers have inadvertently "won" an empty box and had no redress, simply because the seller has been clever with the wording of their listing. Know your rights, and remember that if the seller is selling for the purpose of making a profit then they are running a business in the eyes of the law. Buyers should be aware that items bought from eBay traders are covered by the Distance Selling Regulations, so seek further advice if you feel that your item was not as described."LOST IN THE POST"So you've won the item of your dreams with a virgin bid. Fantastic, or at least it appeared to be, until the item ends up "lost in the post". Contrary to popular opinion, Royal Mail are pretty good, and it may just be that your item wasn't sent at all. Watch out for your lost item popping up again in a future auction, but probably with a higher starting price. After all, the seller doesn't want the same thing to happen again. However, buyers should be aware that there are still many millions of parcels being stored in warehouses as a result of the recent strikes and an on-going overtime ban (causing many items to just sit there while subsequently posted items get delivered straight away), so liaise with your seller in a friendly and constructive manner.FEEDBACK SCAMSDid you know that a seller can gain ten thousand positive feedbacks in less time than it takes to get a reply from eBay customer services? If you type the words FEEDBACK and SCAM into a search engine you will see what I mean. With such a reliance on feedback, it's vital to check exactly how that feedback has been gained. Does it look as if the seller has been selling e-books prior to offering a plasma TV, for example? Is seller's feedback entirely from sellers, and this is the first item they are offering for sale? Do your homework, and read my guide to feedback scamming.CHARGEBACKSThis is a only coffee-break guide, but a whole book could be written about this topic. Sellers can find themselves out of pocket if they're not careful. Buyers can buy items via Paypal, claim that the item was never received, and receive a Paypal refund. The seller is only protected if they have shipped to a confirmed address using a trackable service. Canny buyers will target sellers who just ship via untracked services. Ever received a parcel that you unexpectedly had to sign for? Well, it's highly likely that the seller paid the extra for recorded delivery simply because they were worried about being scammed by a buyer who claims not to have received their parcel. For those sellers who are considering selling on eBay Express, you need to be aware that eBay require you to be willing to ship to unconfirmed addresses using Paypal, leaving yourself open to potential fraud, and a lot of sellers are uneasy about it. Sellers should scrutinise the buyer's feedback carefully, to see if there is any previous evidence of chargeback activity, before shipping high value items.THE UK BUYER WHO WANTS YOU TO SHIP TO HIS RELATIVE IN *******Count the stars and guess the country. That's right - got it in one! Such a common scam, that your auction for that mobile phone is quite likely to be targeted. The buyer claims to be in the UK, but wants the item to shipped to "you know where". Various methods are employed to try to get you to ship your item before you receive the payment. If you watch the available documentary footage you will see enforcement agencies lucky to escape with their lives when raiding internet cafes to make arrests. This form of scamming is very big business. You can protect yourself to a certain extent by setting up your preferences so that your item can only be bid on by UK based sellers, an immediate Paypal payment is required (for Buy it Now items), by selecting Paypal as the only payment method allowed and making sure you never ever ship an item before you receive payment, no matter how much money is being offered.__________Being the world's most popular on-line auction site means eBay is popular with fraudsters too, so being aware of the tricks that scammers use will help keep you safe. If you found my guide useful, and appreciate the fact that I didn't try to sell you anything (I did promise), then please give me the thumbs up by voting YES below. Thankyou very much.

THE COMIC PRICE GUIDE FOR GREAT BRITAIN 1 (A-B)

The Comic Price Guide for Great Britain is coming in July 2010. Thousands of titles and tens of thousands of prices will feature along with grading guides and, eventually, thousands of illustrations from my own personal collection. You'll access the best guide to British comics and other collectible titles like Tin Tin, Asterix and Australian reprints. Plus Marvel and DC Silver Age pence copies. The work-in-progress Guide is currently 1200 pages and growing! There's 20 sample pages here. If you don't see what you are looking for in this sample, e-mail me and I will try to help.Values listed below can only be based on accurate grading! Most British comics on E Bay are in the Poor, Fair, Good and Very Good range. Fine is a nice comic with little handling wear. Very Fine is an exceptionally nice comic and Near Mint is nearly flawless. Phrases like "It's very good for its age" and "It would be mint if it had the covers on" are meaningless. Apologies that the system won't accept my neat tabulation so columns are a bit out of line.If you find all these first 20 guides vaguely useful or interesting, do tell me. And do vote for it. If you don't see the comic you're after, be patient! Everything will be listed eventually! Do e-mail me any comments and corrections. Feel free to ask for a valuation on high grade, rare or first/key issues. I also buy.PLEASE NOTE: All the information is taken from The Comic Book Price Guide for Great Britain Volumes #1-8 by Duncan McAlpine. All information is copyright Price Guide Productions 1989-1997. Copyright renewed 2007. All illustrations are copyright their respective publishers. This is a guide only, based on 40 years of collecting, reading and research. This is an on-going sample that I will change from time to time. At the end of the day it's all a personal opinion. The main thing is to enjoy the E Bay community and have fun with comics.

More mature stories with a decidedly anti-authoritarian streak. The last issue of this first series dated 23rd Oct was withdrawn from sale and is rare. TAKE THAT TICKET FRAUD? Matrixman666 / dogscock141

I bought 2 tickets for a Take That concert from a seller known as dogscock141, now known as Matrixman666 back in june for 185. Now they haven't come, I fall outside of the ebay protection and paypal protection. I am contacting the police. This seller listed the sales as private so cant see other buyers but there are defo at least 51 others out there who fit the bill and may well have been scammed. Please contact me if you have so I can add your name to the list. I have contacted the police as this may well constitute major fraud. Can't say for sure, but certainly seems that way, tickets are officially released now and mine haven't arrived, nor has the seller been courteous enough to email me witha reason why!

Recovery Trucks and MOTs

The writer of the first guide is giving you the best info, Recovery Trucks need to be MOT'd as VOSA reg's are a nightmare ie, spec lifts only are exempt but can only be used for roadside recovery/travelling to a recovery or returning from one,if you get caught shopping, going to the chippie for lunch etc etc,you can be busted. Tilt/slide truckssame scenario but anything on the back must be incapable of moving under its own power,if it starts, drives and runs you can end up losing the truck and the vehicle on the back, that also applies to 7.5t so if your caught carrying a scrapper, defined as a scrapper and therfore not a breakdown/recovery its bye bye truck from the nice gentleman from Vosa.

The moral being, upto 7.5t make sure its got Mot, 7.5t get an operators licence, then provided your not nicking cars your pretty well covered. Besides, try persuading your insurance company its Mot exempt but still roadworthy,,,,,,,,you know what their like NO MOT,,,,,,,,,INSURANCE INVALID

Lego Star Wars Auction Guide

This ebay auction guide is provided to help you make an informed choice (and hopefully avoid some of the common pitfalls) buying LEGO STAR WARS and CLONE WARS together with hot tips and links to web resources. The guide applies equally well to other Lego themes and film tie-ins such as the Indiana Jones, Batman, Ben 10 orToy Story sets.. Please rate the guide if you find useful.

I love Star Wars Lego and buy, sell and collect the original sets and figures together with my sons. We have an excellent collection much of which has been bought from sellers on ebay many of whom are collectors themselves and appear to share that same genuine enthusiasm for Lego Star Wars. However, and just as for any other items on ebay, it is worthwhile being a little cautious and taking the time to research the items, their current values and their seller's reputation.

PRICES

The price guide on the Bricklink website provides a handy reference to new and used values. The completed items via ebay gives a rough idea but can also be a little deceptive as auction prices can be quite variable. Make an informed choice: If a set or item is available direct from Lego Shop At Home or on line via high street stores then check out the prices. New sets can often be cheaper delivered direct from Lego than the same sets offered on auction sites. Why pay over the odds? The same is true of parts or mini-figures. Check the Bricklink price guide and items offered by Bricklink Sellers. Bricklink also provides current values for original set instructions, boxes and separate parts.

WHATS THE LOT?

Half of the battle using ebay to purchase and collect Star Wars Lego is finding out what is on sale. Try to ascertain EXACTLY what is being sold. Is the item new? With or without Instructions? Boxed? Complete? Any replacement parts? If it an expensive item then be sure to communicate with the seller well in advance of the auction end so that you gain a good idea of the lot, it's quality and the kind of seller. The listing itself can be fairly revealing although the opposite can be true too.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Often a poor photograph speaks volumes about an item and can set the alarm bells ringing.. It could be that the seller's family dog particularly enjoys playing with Lego Star Wars. An item could be constructed from a large bucket of used parts many of which are in bad condition or alternative parts may have been used. An instruction booklet may be good for children to create the model but in such bad condition that it isn't of any value to a collector. A model may be covered in years of dirt or suffering from degradation including over-exposure to sunlight.

On request some sellers are happy to provide more detailed photos.

DESCRIPTIONS

Descriptions for Lego items are varied. Short and succinct can be perfectly adequate. Long winded descriptions which barely stop short of detailing your postman's shoe size are often more trouble than they are worth. I find the best ones fall somewhere between the two and offer the right amount of information and which is perfectly relevant to the article for sale. Some long descriptions actually say next to nothing about the actual item for sale but bombard the viewer with other information relating to the seller. Lazy readers can easily skim and miss important details hidden within an excessive description. A classic example in Star Wars Lego listings for mini-figures are verbose descriptions which slip into the small print the fact that they contain magnets(see notes on magnetic figures below). These items usually fetch a lower price and less collectable than those without. I, myself, have bought such items by mistake (doh) having not taken the time to READ THE LISTING adequately. If you do not want to buy Lego mini-figs incorporating magnets it is a good idea to have a list of the 'magnet' mini-figs that Lego have released. Please see the notes on these items below.

Another potential minefield is the addition of the term 'CUSTOM' to a description. The use of the word 'custom' effectively denotes an item that is not an official Lego release. Some expertly built custom figures, dioramas and designs can provide excellent additions to a collection. However the term is also used in descriptions as a 'get out of jail' card for someone to sell an item which purports to be an official Lego release but is seriously lacking in some respect ie. is constructed of the wrong parts. If you are only collecting the officially released Lego pieces then avoid 'Custom' items and look for the term in descriptions.

Keen sellers naturally want the best price for their items and will describe them in their best light. A seller may dress an item in a selection of superlatives such as 'amazing' or 'fantastic!!!' but these subjective statements are in themselves worthless and to be taken with a pinch of salt. I have seen a Jango Fett mini-figure described in such glowing terms and its description photographs revealing it to have been chewed to pieces and kicked to kingdom come. However where an article received is significantly different from that detailed in the listing Paypal does provide some insurance and protection to the buyer. Items that are described as 'rare!' or 'super-rare!' often need to be viewed in comparison to the many other exact same items being sold on ebay and elsewhere. I also wonder sometimes if a poor description including bad spelling is simply a way of deliberately 'acting dumb' to slightly mislead and unload poor quality items. But it is too easy to be cynical.

It is up to the buyer to contact the seller to bring clarity to a listing and given some of the humungous prices that some Lego items reach it is almost mandatory to get more information before bidding and parting with hard earned money. Do not be afraid to ASK QUESTIONS. A good seller will quickly respond and be keen to promote their item and their reputation. Try to be fairly concise. Vague questions can produce vague answers and can be worthless. A good question should be specific. e.g.. 'Is the set 100% complete with any damage or part substitutions?' 'Does the mini-figure contain magnets?' ' Does the instruction booklet have any creases or tears?' 'Is it possible to view more detailed photographs?'

The sellers reply to a question can, just like the bad photograph, be useful in sorting out the wheat from the chaff. There is, however, always the exception and shrewd judgement is always required. Not everyone can take a good photo or write a good description.

As with all ebay auctions take note of the sellers reputation and feedback in previous transactions including the sellers own feedback to buyers. It is a jungle out there and be particularly wary of arrogant, rude sellers. An aggressive seller is likely to care less about the service they provide to buyers. Also bear in mind that buyers and sellers of Lego Star Wars can be be both young and old and often hard working mums!

ALWAYS READ THE
THE LISTING..

Failure to read a listing can result in buying something quite different to what is expected. Beware the 'halo effect' whereby buyers read an auction description to be what they would like it to be. A good example are listings for INSTRUCTIONS to sets rather than the sets themselves. Many people have bid on such items thinking they are the actual sets based on the accompanying picture only to be disappointed and hugely out of pocket.

INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS, STICKERS AND BOXES

Ephemera such as Lego set boxes, instructions and stickers often crop up on ebay. Collectors are keen to obtain good examples to augment and complete their collections. Such items can increase the value of a collection considerably. For these reasons brand new items are highly sought after. Check the Bricklink website for prices and availability.
Sometimes stickers are un-applied either for aesthetic reasons or to keep them in the best condition. If the item you are bidding for requires stickers then note if they are present. Some sticker sets are very rare. Replacements may (but not always) be obtained via Bricklink or the Lego companies service facility (see web link below).
In a similar manner the condition of Lego boxes or external packets is an important factor for collectors. Some sellers will use good packaging to prevent damage in transit. However it is not uncommon for items to be shipped without adequate protection resulting in considerable damage to the Lego box and always a disppointment especially if the item is unopened or new. Contact the seller with a friendly note concerning protection and if a priority it is worthwhile offering additional payment to ensure protection of your Lego investment.
If bidding for instructions then ensure that it is in the correct format. If you want to buy original instruction booklets then ensure that auctions are not for 'electronic' versions or PDFs. Incidentally electronic copies violate Lego's own material copyright and Ebay prohibit their sale.
Always check the prices of Instruction booklets available for purchase via Bricklink sellers. Many original Lego instruction booklets are easily purchased for very little via Bricklink.

On the subject of instructions; scans of nearly all the Lego Star Wars sets instructions are freely available on line either direct from Lego.com or via Peeron or Brickfactory websites. Personally I use the Brickset website as a portal to find instructions and Bricklink for inventories.

POSTAL CHARGES

It is useful to look for postage reductions on multiple item purchases from a single seller. If it is not stipulated then ask the seller or in the last instance request an invoice for all the items together and ask the seller at the same time. Some sellers state that they do NOT combine postage. I try to avoid buying from these people who often IMO try to profit from postage whilst avoiding e-bay fees on the final sale price. Excessive postage charges are not good at all and considering the size and weight of Star Wars mini-figures I personally find some charges for these items unacceptable. New standards introduced in 2008 by ebay should, hopefully, help reduce over-charging. Many sellers no longer charge postal fees in order to improve their seller performance ratings. However this tends to reflect a higher initial starting price, reserve or Buy It Now Price.
Carefully read the auction details concerning shipping costs to avoid any dispute over postal charges. Sometimes the postage can be over the odds and easily missed when seduced by a particularly low auction price. If particularly concerned about delivery time contact the seller. Given the nature of the items it is not unusual for young sellers to be very slow posting and may require a polite reminder. The best sellers often contact the buyer informing them when they have posted the item as a matter of course.

BUYING OVERSEAS

When looking to buy Star Wars Lego items bear in mind that prices in the US can be very much cheaper than the UK and consider buying overseas as an option. Some of the major store outlets in the US will ship to the UK. Some excellent bargains can be obtained from US outlets having stock sales.

It is well worth buying items from US ebay sellers who are more than happy to ship to Europe. However, the shipping cost can be prohibitively expensive. Ensure that you get a quote on shipping costs from overseas sellers prior to buying otherwise it is quite possible to get a nasty shock!

Personally I have rarely bought from sellers outside of Europe and the US but have not experienced any problems where I have done so.

An important fact to remember with overseas purchases is that items outside of the European Union may be liable to import charges and a handling fee. Legally buyers have to pay taxes and import charges on every item over a minimum value (currently over 15 inc.) imported from outside the EU. Couriers actually show some discretion on wether or not to levy charges on packages. If charged the cost is likely to be 15% vat plus 3-5% duty in addition to the couriers fee for making the calculation. Charges are on the total value, including shipping costs and has to be paid before the item or package can be received. Consult the inland revenue website for the latest tariffs. These charges can easily wipe out any advantage in buying cheaply outside of the EU. Some resourceful sellers buy their stock as sets cheaply from the US market and 'part them out' as separate items on ebay uk.

NON-RECEIPT, POSTAL DAMAGE AND MIS-DESCRIBED ITEMS

From time to time problems may occur with transactions: Slightly off the subject of Lego but important for bone fide collectors buying items on Ebay some sellers state that they 'cannot be held responsible' for items once posted with regard to either loss or damage and state that it is up to the buyer to make any claim concerning such issues directly with the postal service. Note that this is NOT the case regardless of any statement made by the seller to this effect and the seller remains responsible for the item both in the eyes of the Post Office and, more importantly, Paypal. Sellers are likely to be very much aware of this. In the event of loss Royal Mail is likely to pay compensation to the Seller within a few months providing the item is sent with proof of posting or insured to the appropriate value. Do not be persuaded by the seller that you are liable for any loss or damage.

As a buyer you are entitled to a replacement or refund from the seller if the item is not delivered, arrives damaged or is significantly different from what has been advertised. Maintain polite communication with vendors and where necessary use the Paypal Resolution Centre or Ebay's new Resolution Centre to resolve disputes. Be aware of the time scales required to make claims. In addition transactions with ebay business sellers are covered by the 'distance selling regulations' which allow for the return of goods without question during a 'cooling off ' period. http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resource_base/legal/distance-selling-regulations/
When returning items ensure that you do so using registered post in order to have documented proof of delivery.

MINI-FIGURES

There are over 200 Star Wars Lego mini-figures to collect varying in availability and price from just a few pounds to over 30 for some of the rarer mini-figures. In addition 'unofficial' custom figures are widely available; more so on the US ebay rather than the UK auction site. Ensure that you have researched current prices and try to avoid paying over the odds unless you have more money than sense. Rare or not be sure that the minifigures you would like to 'win' will appear for auction time and time again on ebay.

There are many visual guides to the official mini-figures available on the internet. Once again Bricklink excels and provides a comprehensive catalogue along with inventory for the separate parts that make up each figure. It is worthwhile printing their listing with thumbnail photos and which currently runs to 5 pages of A4. Another handy visual guide is provided at minifigs.net online. The listing of mini-figures and sets detailed on wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Lego_Star_Wars_sets also provides a quick easy reference as to which mini-figures belong with which sets.

If bidding on the Lego Star Wars mini-figures sold on ebay ascertain exactly what is for sale. Mini-figures on auction can be made from a mixture of custom parts or colours differing from the official released versions. Badly lit photographs or digital processing can make an item look very different. For example a grey Super Battle Droid can be made to look like a rarer blue one and it can become difficult to see if any colour substitutions have made such as brown for reddish brown or grey for blue-ish grey and vice versa. Mini-figures can be in very different states of condition with possible defects such as cracking (arms and torsos) and fading or yellowing. If looking to buy an authentic mini-figure then pay close attention to the mini-figure parts on offer including accessories such as weapons, tools and clothes. As an example a missing or wrong colour cape could work out quite expensive to replace (via Bricklink) once one takes into account minimum fees and postage.

Be aware that occasionally some Star Wars mini-figures for auction may actually consist of plain parts with pasted transfers and replicated designs unlike the authentic printed parts used by Lego. Usually the description states that the items are custom made using decals. As already stated; READ THE LISTING and ask the seller specific questions.

MAGNETIC/KEYRING MINI-FIGURES

As mentioned above Lego have released a selection of Star Wars minifigs as novelty fridge magnets and keyrings. These items looked exactly the same as the collectable versions except the torsos are inseparable from the legs and either contain magnets or in the case of keyrings incorporate a metal rod anchored to their bodies directly through their heads.

The released magnet sets with (3) figures incorporating magnets are:

M228 - Yoda Magnet Set - Yoda, Anakin Skywalker and Clone Trooper (Green Markings)

M229/4269242 - Chewbacca, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi Magnet Set

851939/4508087 - Stormtrooper, Rebel Pilot Y-Wing, Imperial AT-ST Pilot Magnet Set (30th anniversary special edition)

852085/4508133 - Boba Fett, Leia, Royal Guard Magnet Set (30th anniversary special edition)

4524535 - Anakin Skywalker (Young), Darth Maul, Naboo Fighter Pilot (30th anniversary special edition)

Some sellers do not state in their descriptions that their mini-figures for auction are these novelty versions.... much to the chagrin of collectors of the official Lego mini-figures. It is a bit of a 'grey area' which can prove problematic. Contact the seller if you have any doubts concerning this issue relating to an item on auction.

*From 20th March 2008 The Lego Company discontinued selling mini-figures incorporating magnets following new health and safety legislation arising from some unfortunate accidents where small children ingested the parts and suffered medical problems..

The latest (2009) 'magnet' minifigure sets have the magnetic part incorporated into brick stands or pedestals which are separate from the minifigures.

SPECIAL EDITION MINI-FIGURES

Lego released (2000) four collectable 'Star Wars Minifig' packs each consisting of three figures together with collectors cards and display stands.

Lego released special anniversary 'metallic' minifigures; 'gold' C-3PO (2007), 'black chrome' Darth Vader (2009) and magnetic base 'chrome silver' Stormtrooper (2009). In collaboration with DK publishing Lego produced a 'medal ceremony' Luke Skywalker to be included with ' LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary' (2009) Once again if aiming to buy these items at auction ensure that they the genuine article and not the keyring or magnetic equivalents.

LEGO STAR WARS SETS

Apply the same scrutiny as detailed above when looking to buy Lego sets on Ebay. It is even more imperative to ASK QUESTIONS to really know what you are bidding on.

Lego have issued over 200 product releases relating to the Star Wars theme including the Clone Wars cartoon series, Star Wars Force Unleashed game and special edition collectors items ; www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1

Hatching Eggs Buying and Selling

Hi, I've been buying and selling eggs for a while now and here are a few tips. Whenever possible it is best to collect the eggs in person, this ensures that eggs are handled gently while in transit. It is always a good idea tohave a look atthe parentstock, then you can really see the quality of the birds and the conditions in which they are kept, unfortunatelyphotographs don't alwaysgive an accurate portrayal of this. ( Iam always wary of sellers who do not allow collection ).

When buying or selling eggs using the postal service it is best to have them packed in purpose built polystyrene boxes, Ivery rarely havehad any broken , either sending or receiving. It is ideal to have the eggs wrapped in tissue to stop egg movement inside the box, (less chance of air sack damage) andstops any tiny pieces of polystyrene sticking to them due to static electricity caused by movement of the eggs, also it gives the eggs a little more air.

I live in N.Ireland, most of my eggs are sent to,or received from U.K. mainlandand I find that Royal Mail 1st class if posted in the morning will usually arrive next day somaybe not worthwasteing your money on Next day guaranteed!

After receiving your eggs through the post it is best to unpack them as soon as possible. Then they should be placed in a similar way to that of your incubator. ie- if the eggs in your incubator are placed on their side then store themthis way ( same for clocking hen ), or if they are placed upright in the incubator (pointy end down)then store them the same ( empty egg boxes are ideal for this ) . It is best to store them for 24hrs before incubation to allow them to settle but remember to turn them (or tilt the egg boxes30 degrees) at least twice in this period. Then just follow your incubator instructions or place them under your hen.

Best of luck! Charlie.

IF YOU SEE ONE OF THESE ADVERTISED AND A RANGE OF SIZES ARE OFFERED, AND THE DELIVERY TIME IS 5-7 DAYS BECAUSE ITS ACTUALLY COMING FROM HONG KONG!)THEN THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT WHAT YOU ARE BIDDING ON IS A FAKE !!

(AN EXTREMELY POOR FAKE AT THAT!)

Make Money on eBay

This guide will show you how you can Make Money on eBay by selling nothing with FREE delivery and limited overheads. I will also show you how to become a Powerseller and give you products that will become invaluable for your needs.

This is a legal way for you to earn LOTS of money, enjoy your time with eBay , and is not a scam.

Others sell succesfully selling something, charge delivery and still limited overheads but the easiest way to make some money is by having limited overheads, selling virtually nothing, and having FREE delivery.

I am of course talking about selling eBooks and information. I run a shop on ebay "1st for Satellite TV on PC Software". If you click onto the link (name of shop) then you will see that I stock over 100 products and increasing on a daily basis due to demand.

Of course you will need to find out your own "niche" or corner of the market for you to be successful also, however there is plenty of room for everyone to be out there. Different shops have different ways of advertising, and sell different sorts of products. For example, one of the biggest shops selling eBooks specialises in Cooking

Master Replicas Stormtrooper Helmets - less than 60!!

Dear Fellow Star Wars fans

If you shopping for a reasonably price Stormtrooper helmet that is of fairly good accuracy then the Master Replica's Collector Edition helmet is perfect.

It is available from the retailer play (dot) com for a very reasonable 59.99 so don't be duped by people selling these helmets on ebay for much more when you can buy them direct with free postage direct from play.

Master Replicas produced two Stormtrooper helmets:

1. The Collectors Edition

The collectors edition is unlimited run of helmets produced exclusively for the UK. It is of a lesser grade then the limited edition but will please the majority of fans. I have one and it is excellent!!! Constructed of ABS and with flat green lenses and some foam inside, it serves it's purpose well! They retail at 59.99.

2. The Limited Edition.

The LE Helmet was a limited production. They are made of fibreglass and much sturdier than the collectors edition. The interior in lined with and padded and the helmet comes with 'bubble' lenses in green and grey. This helmet is hard to get hold of and retails anywhere between 250 - 450.

So there you have it - don't be confused between the two and if you're quick, get an order in with play and get the excellent CE Helmet for less than 60 with free delivery!
